Root and Recenter Tarot Spread

In the midst of fear and terror, how do we tend to ourselves and our nervous systems? In times of great doubt or uncertainty, what do we reach for to root us back into our center? What helps us to come back home in these moments?

Rooting back into ourselves in the midst of challenging or difficult experiences might seem like a superfluous practice at first glance, but nothing could be further from the truth. The planet is moving through such terror, grief, and crisis right now. When the collective invitation is this heightened and intense, it can blow out our nervous systems very quickly, leaving us overwhelmed, our capacity to cope diminished.

When I locate a desire within myself to sense into a way to tend to myself and be fully present for whatever arises, the first place I turn to is the Tarot.

In Soul Tarot, we look to The Fours for a sacred pause, a breath, a spacious center to help us check in with what would be most helpful for our nervous system in times of overwhelm or stress. Four of Cups might invite us to digest our current experiences, taking a second before opening ourselves to more information. Four of Swords might ask us to take a mental break, inviting us to remember that rest is radical. Four of Pentacles might call us back into deeper boundaries with our bodies, and Four of Wands might call us to engage with joy. If we aren’t taking care of ourselves, how can we expect to be available to the needs of others? By making the radical choice to not bypass our needs and boundaries in the midst of these energies, we set ourselves up to potentially listen and help in far more useful ways.

Root and Recenter Tarot Spread

Take your four Minor Arcana Four cards out of your deck, and hold them in your hand. Tune in with them, asking each of them to come forward and assist you in deepening your self care. Then, pull one of the Four cards for each of the following questions:

  1. What card is showing up as an invitation to root down and recenter?

  2. What am I being invited to pay attention to?

  3. Where do I need to take a pause and a break?

  4. Where do I have spaciousness to be of service at this time?
